Our mission is to improve the golf experience and build a community of golfers. The original group began with people who play regularly at Bobby Jones Golf Course and live nearby. New friends are joining every day - please sign up and Become A Friend.
We are working collaboratively with American Golf, the firm that manages the course for the City of Atlanta; the Ambassadors of American Golf Foundation; and the Bobby Jones Golf Course and Park Conservancy.
Our fiscal agent is Park Pride, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving Atlanta’s park system. Founded in 1989, the foundation of Park Pride’s work is more than 60 “Friends of the Park” groups, community-based partners working to improve the green space in their back yard.
HOW IT ALL BEGAN...
It was the fall of 2010, when Tony Smith, Bruce Hunt and a couple other members of “The Dew Sweepers” (early morning golfers) were preparing to tee-off on #17 at Bobby Jones Golf Course (BJGC). The discussion of golf turned to various proposed improvements at the course, including placing a bench on the 17th tee, which would provide waiting golfers a place to sit until the fairway cleared. Weeks later, Tony advised Bruce that he had a conversation with Tim Toler regarding creating a Friends group with the sole purpose of making various improvements at Bobby Jones Golf Course and supporting public golf in Atlanta. Tim mentioned that Barbara Howell was very instrumental in creating the Friends group at the Bitsy Grant Tennis Center and would be a valuable source of information regarding creating a Friends group at Bobby Jones. Barbara was contacted and mentioned the group needed someone to add a spark of energy and vision to the group and she contacted Peggy McCormick.
Before long, Tony, Bruce, Tim, Barbara and Peggy were meeting on Friday mornings at the Bobby Jones Golf Course. They discussed the creation of the Friends of Bobby Jones Golf Course with BJGC General Manager King Simmons, with the purpose of making the golf experience more enjoyable, and to create a community of golfers at BJGC. Each founding member contributed seed money, which was needed to create the Friends group and get it off the ground.
Finally, on August 9, 2011, the Certificate of Incorporation was approved by the state of Georgia, Secretary of State’s Office, creating the Friends of Bobby Jones Golf Course, Inc., a Georgia non-profit corporation.
Within 2 years, the Friends group grew to approximately 200-members, who are all active golfers at BJGC and have added to the success of the Friends of Bobby Jones Golf Course.
